Adjust your sidebar preferences

Your left sidebar in Slack is an admission point for different parts of your workspace. There are a number of preferences yous can set up to tailor how your sidebar is organized.

Tip: On paid plans, y'all can add custom sections to your sidebar.


Customize the top of your sidebar

At the top of your sidebar is a list of items to assistance you quickly scan your Slack workspace. You lot can customize this list from your preferences:

  1. From your desktop, click your contour picture in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the card.
  3. Click Sidebar in the left-side cavalcade.
  4. Under Always bear witness in the sidebar, cheque or uncheck the boxes next to the sidebar items you'd like to show or hide.

Note: Items at the top of your sidebar are revealed as you interact with different features in Slack, so if you're brand new, you may not see all of them right away. Click More to see any hidden options.

Choose which conversations to prove

Past default, your sidebar will bear witness all the channels yous've joined and the direct messages (DMs) yous use the almost. If y'all'd like, you tin choose to show unread conversations only:

  1. From your desktop, click your profile pic in the summit right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. ClickSidebar in the left-side column.
  4. Nether Show, cull eitherAll your conversations or Unread conversations only.

Tip: On paid plans, you can adjust which conversations are shown for each section in your sidebar.


Sort your conversations

Sort conversations in your sidebar alphabetically or by recent activity. On the paid plans, you tin also sort your conversations by priority, to list the ones yous use most at the top.

  1. From your desktop, click your profile pic in the top right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. ClickSidebar in the left-side cavalcade.
  4. Under Sort, choose your sorting preference.

Tip: On paid plans, you tin can adjust how conversations are sorted for each department in your sidebar.

Similar to your sidebar on desktop, the Dwelling house tab contains a list of your channels and DM conversations. Yous can sort these conversations either alphabetically, by recent activity, or by your custom sections.

  1. From the Dwelling tab, tap the list icon in the acme right.
  2. Select a sorting option from the list.


Prove or hide profile photos

Past default, peoples' contour photos will appear next to direct letters (DMs) in your sidebar. If you'd like, y'all can adjust this preference:

  1. From your desktop, click your profile picture in the top correct.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Sidebar in the left-side column.
  4. Cheque or uncheck the boxes next to Prove profile photos next to DMs.


Listing private channels separately

By default, all channels will exist listed together in your sidebar. If you'd like, you lot tin choose to list private channels separately from public channels:

  1. From your desktop, click your profile moving-picture show in the summit right.
  2. Select Preferences from the menu.
  3. Click Sidebar in the left-side column.
  4. Check or uncheck the boxes side by side to List private channels separately.


Suit your sidebar width

You can adjust the width of your sidebar to make information technology wider or narrower, or collapse information technology:

  • Click and elevate the edge of your sidebar to arrange information technology to your preferred width.
  • Press ⌘ Shift D (Mac) or Ctrl Shift D (Windows/Linux) to plummet or reopen the sidebar.
